Greetings, everyone!
Today’s blog post will cover various expressions you can use to ask for recommendations in Korean. Whether you’re looking for a place to visit or trying to find out what the other person likes, these expressions will come in handy during your conversations in Korean. Let’s dive in and learn how to ask for recommendations in Korean!
추천해 주실래요?
Can you recommend ~ ?
Grammar
The pattern “추천해 주실래요?” is a polite way to ask for recommendations or suggestions from someone.
It is formed by combining the verb 추천하다 (to recommend) with 주다 (to give), resulting in 추천해 주다 (to give a recommendation). This then converts to the polite form 추천해 주시다 (by adding ‘-시-‘ between 주 and 다). Following this, the sentence-closing ending ‘-(으)ㄹ래요?’ (would you like to) is added, giving the meaning of a suggestion: 추천해 주실래요? (please give me a recommendation = can you recommend?).
In this pattern, the object marker ~을/를 is omitted. Grammatically, the object marker should be included, as in ‘식당(을) 추천해 주실래요?’ (Would you like to recommend a restaurant?). However, they are often omitted in conversation.
Detailed grammar can be difficult, but since this is a frequently used expression, you can memorize the pattern itself.
한글 설명
패턴 ‘추천해 주실래요?’는 상대방에게 추천이나 제안을 요청하는 예의 바른 방법입니다.
동사 ‘추천하다’ (to recommend) + ‘주다’ (to give) => ‘추천해 주다’ (to give a recommendation)와 같이 문장을 만듭니다. ‘추천해 주다’는 예의 바른 형태로 ‘추천해 주시다’와 같이 (‘주’와 ‘다’ 사이에 ‘-시-‘를 넣어) 쓸 수 있습니다. 마지막으로, 제안의 의미를 가지는 종결 어미인 ‘-(으)ㄹ래요?’ (would you like to)를 붙여 다음과 같이 문장을 완성합니다.
추천하 +아/어 + 주 + 시 + (으)ㄹ래요? -> ‘추천해 주실래요?’
(please give me a recommendation = can you recommend?)
이 패턴에서 목적격 조사인 ‘을/를’은 생략됩니다. 문법적으로 알맞은 문장을 만들면 ‘식당을 추천해 주실래요?’와 같이 표현됩니다. 그러나 목적격 조사는 종종 대화에서 생략됩니다.
문법을 자세히 분석하면 어렵지만 자주 사용되는 표현이므로 패턴 자체로 외우는 게 좋습니다.
